A Brief Outline
India is a land having a rich heritage, which for centuries has been bound by its traditions and culture. The maintaining of these has continued to enrich the people whom are proud of their ancestry, and their identity, even in the modern India of today. These values have been imbibed through the generations, and the greatness of our spiritual truths and moral values have always placed India in great stead, amongst the nations of the world.

India is home to a population exceeding 900 million and is the world’s largest democracy. It is a land within many lands, with a diverse mix of ethnic denominations. There are 18 major languages spoken, 8 major religions represented, and the country itself is comprised of 25 states and lies north of the equator, and in the center of the eastern hemisphere. Geographically India extends 3000 km from the east to the west and covers a land area of 32,000 square kilometers, which is 2.4% of the earth’s surface.

The name India, was derived from the river Indus, which the early Aryans called the Sindhu. This great river formed the western boundaries of India. The Persians who conquered the land around the river Sindhu, pronounced the letter S as H, and thus terming the region beyond the Sindhu as Hindu, and thereafter came to be known also as Hindustan. The term Hindu was never intended to mean the followers of a particular religion, but referred to people from a regional area.

Whilst India is protected by its natural boundaries with surrounding oceans and the mighty Himalayas, it has been invaded since 300 AC., conquered and ruled by many foreign elements. India despite repeated invasions, was resilient and established itself after the many many falls. The last to leave were the British after having ruled India for over 200 years, and in 1947 India became a free and independent nation.

Through all these trials and tribulations in our history, it is noteworthy that we have as a nation upheld our cultural and religious beliefs, respecting the beliefs of others despite the influences of foreigners. Through the blessings of God and penances of Saints and Sages, India survived the upheavals. Bharatiya Sanskruti was propagated by many enlightened souls through the ages, the more famous being the Acharya Saints, Adi Shankaracharya, Shri Ramanujacharya, Shri Madhavacharya, Shri Nimbakacharya, Sri Vallabhacharya, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and Shri Sahajanand Swami to name a few.

Today Pujya Shri Morari Bapu, Pujya Bhaishri, Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswati (Muniji), are propagating these same truths, and have dedicated their whole lives in the service of mankind and the preservation of Vedic Sanatan Dharma. Our humble pranam to them all. Without our dharma and our cultural identity, we are indeed a lost people, so evident when we see the decline of other ancient cultures in the world today.
