Gujarati School

In 1972, The Auckland Indian Association initiated the Gandhi Gruh Gujarati School at its premises on Victoria Street, Auckland City, known as the Gandhi Hall. With the objective of teaching language, cultural and traditional values, it was envisaged that the community would significantly benefit with strong family and community bonding.

Classes were held every Sunday with Teachers donating their time and experience. Almost three decades later, the tradition continues, with an expanded roll of 120 students at Mahatma Gandhi Centre on New North Rd. The popularity of the classes has seen the School seeking to recruit more teachers and creating more classes. The role of Gujarati School is extended when participation from students is highly sought in cultural shows and national festivals held at various times throughout the year. Their participation is also requested at various locations outside the main venue, Mahatma Gandhi Centre. Despite the increasing pressure of western ways, it is heartening to note that with parental and teachers encouragement, children enthusiastically take on board the tradition of Indian culture with language classes as time allows.

At present there are nine teachers meeting the needs of 120 pupils. Every Sunday, during the School term, the morning starts with a prayer at the Mandir, which is in close proximity. During this half hour, the students share the imparted knowledge of the Priest. At times, a teacher or a community member provides interpretation in English and a talk on saints and philosophers.

With the increasing Indian population in the Metropolitan area, greater demands are placed on the organisation for resources and importantly, the valuable effort made by the Teachers.

Their enthusiasm to teach is what will eventually be a start of a cultural and a moral guiding light for future generations of our children.
